Lightning Strikes : RAF BINBROOK

Lightning Strikes : RAF BINBROOK

SKU: SDB-Binbrook

One of the last batch of pre-war expansion scheme airfields, Binbrook was built on Ash Hill in the Lincolnshire Wolds. Theusual arrangement of the later Type C hangars, five in number, facing the bombing circle was backed by the administration, technical and barrack sites in close proximity.

At the end of 1959 Binbrook was put on care and maintenance status. The airfield then held appeal for Fighter Command which called for development work including the extension of the main runway by another 500 yards. Reopened for flying in June 1962 the first element of Fighter Command to take up station, was No. 64 Squadron with Javelins, which stayed nearly three years.

No. 85 Squadron, with Meteors and Canberra's for air fighting development duties, was at Binbrook for nearly nine years. Then in October 1965 English Electric Lightning's arrived for a re-born No.5 Squadron, joined by a second squadron, No.11, in 1972. The Lightning squadrons remained until May 1985 - the last in RAF service.

It is this last period, 1972-85 which is modelled here. AI F6 Lightnings of 5 Sqn, 11 Sqn and the Lightning Training Flight populate the apron and QRA sheds with a LTF F6 doing touch and go's. Up to 19 in total depending on the settings.

The technical and accomodation site is extensively modelled complete with night lighting. The buildings being representative of RAF/MoD buildings of the period but not necessarily to be found at Binbrook.

The scenery is supplied with AI Lightnings courtesy of David Hanvey and Paul Barry.

A 24 hr AI flightplan is included along with a saved flight (FS9 only) sit back and watch the activity whilst listening to ATC.

To enjoy the full scenic effects of Binbrook a high spec computer is desirable but scenery and AI density are scaleable for those with lower spec computers.

    Working floodlights and streetlights.
